The Metabolife Triathlon Blog

In the spirit of “I start now”, our Metabolife Marketing Director, Niki Simoneaux, has decided to do her first triathlon this year. She, along with two other women on her training team have agreed to track their progress and experience through this blog in the hopes that it might inspire others to take on healthy lifestyle changes and challenges. As you can imagine the process has its ups and downs, but you will get to hear it all right here.

The indoor tri is tomorrow. I was so bummed to be sick last time that I am actually excited (and nervous) about this one. I need to try on the wetsuit tonight. My actual race is one month away and things are really starting to get momentum. I have been out on the bike a few times and am...

I finally started doing swim lessons on the side. We set up a small group and it makes me wonder why it took me so long. Everything costs money, but really…this should have preceded spinning shoes, heart rate monitor, and a lot of other things. It did amaze me that the things your body does...

This is the first real vacation (Jazz Fest in New Orleans) I am taking since I started training and my goal is to workout at least 3 of the 5 days I am out since I will be missing three of our sessions. I can’t do the same stuff, but I can run and for the couple days I have access, I can swim...

So apparently everything I have procrastinated about has some element of fear attached…even in places I didn’t realize. I went to try out different bikes today. The guy at the store told me to take them out on the road and test them out…I realized that it had been about 4 years since I was on...

So, to end the first 8 week training we have an indoor triathlon, which happened this morning. For the first time since we started training, I am sick. Really sick. So, while it may sound like I managed to eek out of an indoor tri and a grueling workout, the truth is that I watched, totally...

So, I officially got my first triathlon training injury today. Unfortunately, it was nothing spectacular like trudging up a mountain on a bike and falling. It was slipping on the wet floor in the locker room. Luckily, I was in a swim suit, not naked, but as I am sure you can imagine…...

We did speed work today for our run. After warm up, we did 8 laps of 400 meters…a total of 2 miles with a rest between each lap. I am not sure how it will translate when I run straight through, but I shaved about a minute off my mile, which felt great. I don’t know how to explain it, but I...

What a gorgeous day! I hosted a few friends from training to do their long run down in Battery Park and then come to my place for brunch. We basically had a blizzard this week, so I figured we were toast and would have to cancel. But, a couple warm days melted the snow on the path along the...

So, I finally talked to my trainer about diet since I am still exhausted all the time. I expected to be tired for a bit, but geez….it has been 5 weeks of training. I figured I should have worked through some “hump” and have some energy high from the increased workouts. But no.

In...

So, instead of being annoyed by no results, I decided to be really strict about everything this week. Workouts on my own are easier too because now that I have to wake up at 4:45AM two days a week, I am naturally waking up by 5:30AM on the other days. No late nights…no drinking. I am lucky...

So, it is week three, which feels like almost week 4, which is 50% of the 8 week training…and I am freaking out a bit because I have only lost about 2 lbs. Which, for all intents and purposes, is nothing, since that could easily be water weight. I am working out 7-8 hours a week vs. 3 hours a...

It is week two and a couple things are sorted out. Running and swimming are going to be tough. Cycling seems easy or at least doable for now. But, I don’t have my heart rate monitor yet and I have a fear that maybe I need to push harder when spinning to make it worthwhile. I am starting to...

The 8 Week Full Throttle training officially started today. Running today was a bit humbling. First, I am the slowest. I shouldn’t care, but, I still have an ego. I also think that my nerves get to me. I run longer when I train on my own than I was able to do today. The group is great...

Training was awesome. Exhausting, but awesome. It made me realize that I am toast if I try to do this all by myself. Not that I couldn’t, but the risk of getting hurt or not being ready are too great. We spent time in the training doing each element – running, cycling and swimming. At least...

As fate would have it, I told my boss today that I had submitted my video to be chosen, that it wasn’t, but that I still planned on doing a triathlon. He told me that an endurance team we sponsor, Full Throttle, was holding a ½ day training session at Chelsea Piers in New York this Saturday and...

So, the CNN Fit Nation website just posted that there would be a “sneak peak” at the chosen participants this weekend. Since I was not called and asked to be part of the “sneak peak” episode, I am guessing that means I was not picked. A little bummed. I think the added pressure of being part...

First swim. Ugh. I hope it isn’t too cliché to say I felt like a fish out of water. My goal was to simply go from one side of the pool to the other – any way possible – for as long as I could. I managed 25 minutes, but gave up on freestyle swimming quickly. I feel like I have been in water...

The video is up! And honestly, I have no idea how these will be picked. I told my trainer what I was up to. He asked the obvious, but surprising question…are you going to do it anyway, even if you don’t get picked? I hadn’t really considered it, but it seems a little lame to only be willing...

A little about me. My name is Niki. I work as Director of Marketing for the Metabolife brand. As you may or may not know – Metabolife creates weight management products - so, if I didn’t already have reason enough to think about my weight and health, this job keeps it on my mind all the time...
